Fifty yards to the south of the out-of-the-way construction site, an empty dirt lot is dotted with a variety of portable offices, straight out of a mob movie. Cliche’d, perhaps?

This feels more along the lines of what I had been expecting, though. Several vehicles are parked along the outer perimeter of the lot. A high-end luxury sedan is parked on the street about fifty yards, well clear of the lot. Good money says that’s Neubauer’s ride.

While this place isn’t anywhere near as busy as the construction site, there are still a handful of people walking around. The space is smaller, and the crew is fewer in number. This late at night, they would absolutely notice a stranger like me, which means I’m still unable to move around freely without being spotted.

More and more, this whole site looks like a front for a legitimate business. This far away from public traffic, Neubauer is free to run this place however he sees fit, earmarking it for his nefarious business affairs. It’s the perfect place to meet and greet equally shady types after hours.

Five portable office trailers form a rough semi-circle, with plenty of space between each—too much of a gap to deftly move from one to the next. I’ve got to target one of the offices on the outer edge.

I know the odds are low of striking paydirt, but it’s the most accessible from my position. If it doesn’t turn anything up, I’ll at least be able to stage my approach from there to the next in line.

The trailer has two entrances. But only one is obstructed from view enough for me to approach. I press my ear to the door while reaching for my picking tools. No one inside, and the lock proves no match, granting access almost as fast as if I had the key.

Looks like I’ve stumbled into what appears to be the break room for the site. Oof, this place is bare bones. It is hardly deserving of the moniker break room. An overworked, under-compensated coffee maker gurgles and hisses, sharing its woes with the sugar and powdered creamer. A pair of desks and chairs sit along one wall, with nowhere to kick up your feet and watch a little TV. That’s harsh, Neubauer.

Save for the sad excuse for a coffee bar, the trailer is empty. But I can’t linger, starting my search right away. The desks are clean and organized, with no computers hooked up. The drawers contain mostly office supplies, paper clips, staples, and pens.

The office has seen some use, mainly around the coffee maker. But nothing that helps shine a light on Neubauer. The filing cabinets are literally empty. Not even hanging file folders. This trailer is a complete bust.

Time to leapfrog to the next spot.

I peer out the windows, studying the movement patterns of the people walking around. They aren’t in a hurry. Security, I imagine, although none seem particularly observant. They’re not expecting any type of threat or intrusion, it seems. Neubauer probably dumped a bunch of his inexperienced guys to watch over this place.
